Southern California Water Company
Historic Pumphouse Strengthening & Remodel
Claremont, California
To provide full design services from pre-design through contract administration for the demolition of one historic pumphouse and the remodel of a second historic pumphouse located in the City of Claremont Ca. Both pumphouses were constructed of river rock in the late 1880’s. One was in a partially demolished state and in the rear of a residential property. The other was in a severely deteriorated state but was located along the street. Both structures were of historic value. The City of Claremont was interested in saving both structures. The Water Company wanted to demolish both structures. DSS negotiated with both parties to save the most visible of the two buildings using materials salvaged from the demolition of the other. The building was designed to resist the seismic loads in excess of those required under the provisions of the historic building code.

Design Source Studios, together with Southern California Water Company, was awarded a certificate of excellence by the Architectural Commission of the City of Claremont for this project.
