Barton Hill Elementary School
San Pedro, California
To provide full design services from schematic-design through contract administration for the construction of a new classroom building for the Los Angeles Unified School District. Sorcinelli Architects Inc. were selected as the Architects for this school and a similar project for 15th Street Elementary School. Schematic design commenced in December of 2000 and construction started in the Spring of 2002. This project is a free standing new building which will forms part of the existing Barton Hill School campus. The program for this project includes classrooms, a small group instruction room, and restrooms. The project is constructed entirely on the existing campus. The client requested that the project be a 2 story building and that it have a compact footprint to allow the maximum of open space for the playground. The design solution for this project can be seen as a prototype for other similar projects for other campuses. The design solution is adjusted to relate to the colors and form of the existing campus buildings. The project incorporates prototypical classrooms that have been provided by LAUSD facilities design division. Solar control devices are incorporated on the south facade to allow maximum glass area while restricting solar penetration and thus reducing energy consumption. The HVAC system is designed to allow for opening windows and incorporates an economizer cycle to further reduce energy consumption. Landscape materials and irrigation are designed for low maintenace and low water usage. model
